The beautiful beach of Cala Sisine is located in the heart of the coast of Baunei, in the Gulf of Orosei. Less known but just as beautiful as the others coves of the Gulf, it offers a spectacular view. Halfway between the Fico cave and Cala Luna, this cove rises at the end of the “Codula di Sisine“, in the mountains of the Supramonte. Here runs a stream that flows just before the beach, overlooking one of the most beautiful and least visited coves of the gulf.
Cala Sisine stands out for its extremely white small and medium-sized pebbles, which make up the beach. The seabed is made of white sand of large calcareous grains and rocks rounded by the sea. It presents itself as an ideal destination for those who want to immerse themselves in its waters and explore the underwater world, or for those who wish to enjoy the sun in the shore. Cala Sisine is bounded both north and south by a cliff, which is particularly high in this area. To the south, there is a spectacular inlet more than fifty meters high, which acts as a springboard for the most daring and courageous divers.
Formerly called “Portu ‘e Sisine“, it had for decades the function of a crucial point for loading coal, collected by charcoal burners throughout the surrounding area and then transported to the peninsula, in particular in Tuscany. On the north side of the beach there is still a small building built by coal miners.
Near Cala Sisine, moreover, traces of the presence of man in this area, since 4000 years ago, have been found. In ancient times it was an usual stop made before or after having dubbed the terrible “Insani Mountains“, from which Cape Montesanto takes its name. A little further south of the beach, on the other hand, rises “Su Stuggiu” – the hideout in the Sardinian language -, in which, according to the locals, a submarine hid during the period of the Second World War.
