The Isolotto d’Ogliastra is a slice of the uncontaminated Gulf of Arbatax
The Isolotto d’Ogliastra, as it is commonly called, is actually a small archipelago of several islets, with three main rocks discovered at water level. The two big rocks, on the west side, were in principle united with the larger islet. In this islet, which covers over 40 hectares of land, there’s the statue of the “Madonna D ‘Ogliastra“.
The island was for a long time a crucial point for navigation, and it was also important because it provided shelter for boats, until the port of Arbatax was built. Furthermore, around the middle of the 1800s, a port in the island was started to be built, a project that was later abandoned in favor of the construction of the current port of Arbatax. In more remote times, moreover, according to various sources, the islet offered shelter even to pirates, when the coast was under Spanish rule.
The islet is a destination for many boaters and sea lovers, who find shelter in the harbor during the days and hot summer nights. It’s the home of cormorants and seagulls, and its waters are teeming with life. If you’ve never seen the Isolotto d’Ogliastra from the sea, the “Panoramic view of the Gulf” is the right line for you.
